Vallo Cowl

The Vallo cowl is an entertaining project with it’s graphic, allover colorwork and interesting angles. The generous funnel shape slips over one or both shoulders and fits comfortably around the neck for a divinely cozy effect. The pattern is worked from the bottom up with a central decrease at the front causing the piece to dwindle into ever smaller rounds as you knit. With every completed round, the momentum builds—you won’t be able to put this project down!

NEEDLES
• One 32" [80 cm] circular needles (circ) in size US 7 [4.5 mm]
• One set double-pointed needles (dpns) in size US 7 [4.5 mm] or use circ needle for magic loop for smaller circumferences

GAUGE
23 sts and 27 rows = 4" [10 cm] in Stockinette stitch colorwork, after blocking.

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
Upper neck circumference: 171⁄2" [44.5 cm]; lower edge circumference: 481⁄2" [123 cm];

The pattern includes a chart for the sample you see here, and an inverse color chart which you can use if you'd like to switch the dark and the light colors.

Q:

I am wondering why with a cast on of 278 the center stitch is 140?

A:

The "center stitch" is slightly off-center because there are an even number of stitches on the needles. You can think of the first stitch in the round as the "back center stitch" and the one that you mark as a "front center stitch". With that thinking, the math works out so that there are 138 sts between the front and back center stitches. The math looks like this: 1 "Back Center Stitch" + 138 sts + 1 "Front Center Stitch" + 138 sts = 278 stitches total.
